The Ephemeral Anchor
From 2024 to August 31, 2025, Grey Lab operated as a critical node in Vancouver's DIY ecosystem. Located in a former salon at 438 West Pender, it filled the void left by previous underground venues, offering an all-ages sanctuary for punk, math-rock, and indie experimentation.
Community Over Commerce
Founded by Mungo Dulmage, the venue prioritized community care over profit. In a city defined by exclusion, Grey Lab was radically inclusive, known for its "Pay What You Can" ethos and a high-trust environment where the crowd once saved a patron's life during a medical emergency. Its closure was driven by the structural pressures of the "Highest and Best Use" tax model and regulatory scrutiny.
Evolution: From Place to Platform
Though the physical space is gone, Grey Lab has re-emerged in 2026 as a nomadic promoter. The spirit of the venue lives on through events like Crash Test Fest at the Hollywood Theatre, proving that while the building can be evicted, the community cannot.
