The Fox Cabaret Atmosphere

Arriving at The Fox Cabaret at 5:15 PM for sound check offered a rare glimpse behind the curtain of "AMPED UP," a showcase co-produced by Live Acts Canada and Yeah Man Entertainment. The Yeah Man team, true to their mission of rebuilding the scene through connection, proved to be some of the most genuine and engaged figures in Vancouver’s entertainment sector. Their infectious love for the scene set the tone for the night well before the doors opened at 7:00 PM.

Logistically, the night was a tight ship. Interestingly, Exit Strategy was the first to sound check and the last to play, displaying a "first in, last out" work ethic that underpinned the event’s smooth execution.

As the room filled, the demographics revealed a healthy ecosystem: a balanced four-way split of fans, family, friends, and industry professionals. The vibe was intimate yet electric, with almost every attendee connected to at least one band by less than a degree of separation. This "adjacent genre" billing meant that fans who came for indie rock stayed for egg punk, creating a night of discovery where everyone unapologetically enjoyed themselves.

The Incident

The Incident kicked off the night at 7:30 PM. A staple of the local indie rock circuit, this five-piece outfit (though rumors suggest their lineup number fluctuates) delivered a set characterized by professional precision and dramatic flair. They maximized their stage time with big gestures and "soft but dramatic hailing," proving they could make a spectacle out of a standard rock setup. A professional group that clearly knew what they were doing, they left the stage perhaps too soon, leaving the growing crowd primed for the next act.

Shoreplay

Next was Shoreplay, a group that defied easy categorization. While officially described as a "sonic story-telling" unit with folk and pop instincts, their set felt less like a rigid performance and more like a killer jam session among friends.

The six-piece arrangement found its texture in Mhairi MacCallum’s fiddle playing, which brought a fun, distinct layer to the sound and became a highlight for many guests. True to their genre-bending reputation, they dropped a sick cover of My Chemical Romance, transforming the emo anthem into a folk/soul experience. The crowd’s response: screams and chants for "one more song", suggested they had the strongest draw of the night.

Exit Strategy

Closing the evening was Exit Strategy, a band that sent me searching for a definition of "Egg Punk." They brought the swagger of rockstars with the riffs to back it up, delivering a chaotic, high-energy set that lived up to their "space punk" descriptor. The barrier between artist and audience dissolved completely when a band member jumped into the mosh pit—twice—to hype the crowd and join the fun.

The Fox Cabaret, with its intimate sightlines and great staff, was the perfect vessel for this lineup. Seeing the bands support each other side-stage throughout the night confirmed that "AMPED UP" was a successful exercise in community building where the energy was simply unmatched.
